WPT Season 11: Super High Roller, Part 3 Hand Analysis

Posted by Dave Consolazio September 18, 2013

Sunday night’s WPT broadcast showed the thrilling conclusion to the $100,000 Super High Roller event. After getting down to three-handed, Daniel Perper lost a race with (K7) to David “Doc” Sands’ (55) to finish in 3rd place for a $409,500 payday.

Almost immediately upon getting to heads up, Joseph Cheong shoved with (A3) and was unable to improve against Sands’ (A8), earning Cheong a $614,250 cash for 2nd place and David Sands the High Roller Title and the $1,023,750 that came with it.

All three players played great at the televised final table and were deserving of their paydays. A couple of key hands on the bubble were the difference between a six-figure cash and nothing at all. Here’s a look at those two hands, which serve as a reminder that you must always be cognizant of the structure of the tournament you are playing in.

Hand 1: Daniel Perper (1,940,000, 32 BB) vs. David Sands (2,520,000, 44 BB)

    Pre-flop:

With the blinds at 30,000/60,000, Dan Perper is first to act with QQ, and he raises to 150,000. David Sands smooth calls with AQ. Joseph Cheong (with 12BB) folds A10 in the small blind and Jim Courtney mucks his rags.

Brilliant plays by Sands and Cheong here. As strong of a hand as AQ is 4-handed, Sands understands the bubble situation and elects to keep the pot small instead of three-betting. Cheong, holding two cards that many might shove with in this spot, realizes that Sands is almost never flatting with a hand he is ahead of, and wisely lays it down.

    The flop: 6Q7

    Perper bets 200,000. Sands calls.

The case queen gives Perper the nuts on the flop and Sands a hand that he has no reason to believe isn’t best here. I like Perper’s continuation bet here, as far too many players check a monster like this; considering you raised pre-flop and are likely to c-bet regardless of what you are holding, why not do so when you flop gin?

Again, Sands shows great discipline and awareness of the situation with a flat call here to keep the pot under control. I can’t say that I wouldn’t have put in a raise here and probably been in a really tough spot down the road in this hand.

    The turn: 6Q7(5)

Perper checks, Sands bets 340,000, Perper calls.

Great check by Perper, who correctly deduced that if Sands had enough of a hand to call pre-flop and post-flop with, he probably has enough to bet with here. Sands uses great bet-sizing here, betting a bit under half of the pot to give Perper the right price to call.

I don’t mind the flat call behind by Perper, but I might have check-raised here. By this point we are pretty sure that Sands has a hand, and calling this bet is going to let him know we’ve got one too, which might lead him to check behind with a hand with showdown value if we slow-play on the river.

    The river: 6Q75(6)

Perper checks. Sands bets 530,000. Perper immediately announces all-in. Sands folds.

I would have value-bet if I were Perper here. I’d be too worried about Sands checking behind with the type of hand that he might call a value bet with, and he might even perceive it as a defensive bet and come over the top. But checking obviously wasn’t a mistake, as he was once again correct that he would induce a value-bet from Sands.

Great fold by Sands here. The clues were all there; the quickness of Perper’s all-in, the fact that he is very rarely ever going to be risking his tournament life on the bubble on a bluff, and that his initial pre-flop raise could have been a steal attempt with any two cards that connected well with this board. But getting 4.5-to-1 on a call (710,000 into a 3,280,000 pot) that would all but clinch the tournament for you if you are good is never an “easy” lay down. But then, Perper would know that too, wouldn’t he? Good fold.

Hand 2: Daniel Perper (~2,750,000, 45 BB) vs. Jim Courtney (~940,000, 15.5 BB)

So that was a hand in which David Sands minimized damage to avoid disaster with the bubble looming. Jim Courtney did the exact opposite in this one.

    Pre-flop:

Immediately after doubling up Joseph Cheong’s short stack after getting 6-outed on the river, a slightly steamed up Dan Perper min-raises to 120,000 with J8. Sands folds. Cheong calls in the small blind with 76. Jim Courtney picks up 77 in the big blind, and elects to call.

Short-stacked and facing two players that have shown a willingness to play with any two cards, this seems like a pretty clear-cut squeeze shove for the short-stacked Courtney. An argument could certainly be made for squeezing with a weaker hand than this. But perhaps worried about the bubble, Courtney just calls.

    The flop: 8J6

Cheong checks. Courtney checks. Perper bets 160,000. Courtney calls.

Now Jim Courtney’s flat call on the flop makes even less sense. Perhaps worried about the bubble, he opts to call instead of raise. He misses the flop with no set and two over cards out there. So fold and live to see another day. You can only beat a bluff, and you don’t have enough chips to call down another bullet or two.

    The turn: 8J6(9)

    Courtney all-in for 660,000. Perper snap-calls.

With the open-ended straight draw, Courtney decides to gamble. He has virtually no fold equity here, offering the chip leader Perper 2-to-1 on a call and the added equity of knocking Courtney out to burst the bubble. If Perper has paired his 8, 9, or J and all 10 of Courtney’s straight and set outs are live, he is still only ~23% to win the pot. If this is a palatable gamble now, why wasn’t it when he was at worst a ~20% dog to an over pair pre-flop, where he had tons of fold equity and was more likely to be flipping than dominated if called?

The K on the river sealed the deal.

It’s a shame for Jim Courtney, who played great at the final table that one misplayed hand can be the difference between scooping up four big blinds and walking out the door. But anyone who’s played no-limit knows that feeling all too well; though perhaps not in regards to a six-figure swing.

Dan Perper, Joseph Cheong and David Sands cashed this event with smart short-stacked shoves and cautious post-flop play on and near the bubble. Jim Courtney made mistakes in both of these areas on his final hand.

WPT Season 11 continues next Sunday night on your local Fox Sports station with Part 1 of the WPT World Championship.
