    Cash Plays feat Nick DiVella

Posted by John Kim April 4, 2012

First off on Cash Plays, we would like to send our best wishes to Joe Tehan who is expecting a child any day now. Hopefully the baby won’t be born on April 15th!

This weekend I had a deep run in a live tournament at the MGM Grand. I was chip leader going into the final table until I ran my AK in to aces. I busted in 5th place with a 2k score. Not too shabby for 18-20 hours of work, but these live tournaments are such a grind!

I ask Joe, who is primarily a live player, how he handles this. He says he tries to look at it realistically. In all likelihood, you are not going to win or cash in the tournament. This is true roughly 80% of the time so you just as well enjoy it. While it may not be the most optimistic approach, it is the reality of poker tournaments. There is a mental coach named Jarred Tendler that may need to spend some time with Joe.

I can now understand why people charge mark ups when selling pieces of themselves in tournaments. I felt like these live tournaments are such a grind and a lot of work. I should be getting paid for my time! I can now understand why players charge mark ups.

    Favorite hands

By far the hand that makes the most money is pocket aces. Too many times players get sentimental attachment to hands like J10 suited for example. It is important to recognize, how much money you have lost by playing this hand. In my opinion, if you don’t say Aces is your favorite had, you are a donkey!

    Nick DiVella

Nick Divella was a very successful Rush Poker player on Full Tilt and is now a successful live cash game player. One of the things that impressed us about Nick is the fact that he treats his poker playing like a job. He plays by an hourly schedule and even gives himself two days off a week. Poker is like a business to him.

Joe says he has started to take the same approach. Before, like most players, Joe would just start playing whenever he wanted, and left when he wanted. Joe seems to like scheduling his hours like this a lot better.

Nick primarily plays 5-10NL and some 10-20NL at the Aria. We discuss the toughness of the games as the levels go up. Nick says the 10-20NL game isn’t played that often. But when it does go on, usually it’s 7-8 pros with 1 or 2 “whales” in the game. We ask Nick if there is a big jump in the skill of play between the two levels. Nick says he believes the biggest jump for him was going from 1-2NL to the 2-5 game.

Hand Discussion – The 9s Hand

There was a question posted on our StackEmCoaching.com forums.

In a 2-5 game where the stacks ranges from $300-$1000, the UTG player, described as a “massive calling station”, raises to $20 and every player at the table called. The hero, with a $550 stack, is sitting in the SB with pocket 9s. The question is asked, what should the player do pre-flop. Many of the people who responded on the forum thought he should just call and try and hit a set. Joe disagrees. With 9s being the 6th best hand in hold ‘em and with all the dead money in the pot, he would shove in this spot. Nick feels that we are too deep to make that play. If we had a stack of around $375, then shoving would be a good play. Nick believes that if the board comes 8 high, we are going to get paid anyway. If we miss, we can always check fold and are only out $20. Some very interesting analysis of these varying opinions ensued and is well worth the listen.

    Hand Discussion – Nick’s 10-20 game

UTG +2, Nick is dealt pocket Qs and raises to $80. The cutoff, button and the SB call. Nick describes the cutoff and button as both good players. The SB was an older man that had just sat down. The read that Nick had on the older gentleman was, as he put it, a “Standard Old Guy”. The flop comes 5-4-4 with two diamonds. SB checks, Nick c-bets to $200, the cutoff folds and the button calls. The SB check-raises to $820. The stack sizes are around 4k. What is the play?

Joe, stating his experiences with playing against the “Standard Old Guys”, believes the best play is to just fold in this spot. I agree that folding is the right play.

Nick prefaces that he was stuck at the given time. In this hand he decides to shove. He felt this was the play instead of just calling. He didn’t want to price the good player on the button into the pot. The result turned out that the button folded, the SB tanked and eventually folded.

    Hand Discussion #3

Playing 5-10NL, a loose/weak player raises to $35 and five people call. The hero is on the button with 78c. Flop comes AA9 with two clubs. SB bets $110, the loose/weak player calls, and the hero on the button also calls. The turn is the 3s. The SB checks. The fish bets $220. While the math says our hero should fold, he feels that if he hits his flush, there is no way the fish is going to fold. The hero calls and the river is a Kc giving the hero the flush.
This is where it gets interesting. The fish starts mumbling and talking about the river card and says “If you’ve got it, you’ve got it. I’m all in.” The hero snap calls. If a player starts mumbling and complaining about a card on the river and then shoves, it’s a definite tell that he has the nuts.

We breakdown the hand and agree the right play was to call the bet on the flop. Calling on the turn was a bad play. And of course calling on the river with the obvious live tell was not the right play. After missing the turn, the hero should have been done with the hand.
