Cash Plays feat Nick DiVella & David Tannenholz

Posted by John Kim April 19, 2012

First off we would like to congratulate Joe on the birth of his first child, Tyler. After introducing Tyler to the world, who ironically has more hair on his head than Joe, it is time to talk poker on Cash Plays.

Currently, I have been running bad while playing online. Whenever you are running bad, it is a good idea to step back and look at your game to see what you are doing wrong. I play a loose aggressive style when I play online. After reviewing my play, I found that my showdown win percentage was around 46 percent. If you choose to play the “Lag” style, you should be getting to showdown less often. I play 2/4NL and 5/10NL. At these stakes, the players online are much tougher and have good fundamentals. I found that I have been hitting the top of my opponents’ ranges so I chose to tighten up my game. As Joe stated, the tougher your opponents, the more the cards matter. After making this adjustment, I have been winning more often. No matter how long you play, you never stop learning in poker. Even if you are running good, keep looking at the small things.

    James’s Online hand

James, one our coaches at StackEmCoaching.com, is playing a full ring 50NL (.25/.50) on PokerStars. James is UTG with $53 raises to $1.50 with QJd. UTG+1 that James describes as a “Reg Fish” calls. Button, who is a nitty player, calls. The flop comes J,5,10 with two clubs and a spade. With $5.25 in pot he bets $3.50 and gets called in both spots. Turn comes 2 of hearts he bets $11.50 and both call again. With $50 in the pot, James asks what he should do next. River was an off suit 2.

Joe likes James’s play of betting on the flop and the river. If you’re out of position, it’s a good idea to keep your foot on the gas. Make your opponents pay for their draws. Joe feels he should never bet for value. And you shouldn’t bet as a bluff because you are going to get called by AJ or KJ.

After some discussion, we decide the right play is to check the river. We would never bet for value in this spot because we are not going to be called by worse hands. James suggests shoving the river as a bluff. We both agree that shoving into two players is a bad idea. There is no way we are being called by weaker hands and stronger hands are always going to call.

We believe you can get more value by checking and giving your opponents, who may have a missed flush and/or straight draws to bet at the pot.

    Turning made hands into bluffs

I was playing 5/10 NL with a student of mine. There were two limpers and I raised to $60 with Qc9c. I get two callers and the flop comes Q,2,9 rainbow. They all check to me and I bet ½ pot and I get one caller. River comes an offsuit ace and he checks and I check back. The river pairs the board with another deuce. He checks. It is likely the other player also has a Queen in his hand and we would be splitting the pot. Since he checked the river it is doubtful the other player has an ace in this spot. Most players would check this hand back and be content to win the pot with a Queen and Ace kicker. I feel this is a good spot to “Bomb the River”. Or over betting the pot. I am basically free rolling here since we have determined that our villain has a queen in his hand. The pot was $300 and I bet $320. Honestly, this was too small. I should have bet somewhere in the range of $400-$550. I gave him a too good of a price to call here. By over betting, I give myself a chance to scoop the pot where it likely we would be chopping.

    1/2NL and Table Image

We answer an email from a view who asks: How important is table image when playing 1/2NL with a $40 buy-n.
Joe has always said that table image is overrated. You shouldn’t sit down with a certain image in mind. Let the image come to you. For example, if you’re card dead and you are folding a lot of hands, people with think you are a nit and you can play off that. The opposite is also true, if you’re dealt a lot of big hands and are playing a lot of pots, go ahead and play off that as well.

At this level, and with stacks being this shallow it is not important. You should concentrate more on the mathematics of this type of game.

    Nick Divella and David Tannenholz

In this segment, we bring back Nick DiVilla who will be filling in for Joe as he attends to his newborn son. We welcome as our guest David Tannenholz. David served as a mentor to Nick when he was starting out and is also a coach at StackEmCoaching.com.

Next, we talk about a hand on our StackEmCoaching.com forum. In a 1/2NL game, the villain is UTG and opens to 15. MP calls. Hero in the C/O with 6h6d also calls. Flop comes A,5,6, with two clubs so our hero hits middle set. UTG leads out for $20, MP shoves his remaining stack in for $35. The hero asks what he should do. We all agree that he should just flat call. Since we are in position, we can entice the villain into the hand with a weaker holding. As we have stated before, we have to think in terms of EV. Raise here represents a monster hand and could scare off potential profits.

One of the suggestions in the forum was to pretend to accidently min-raise and then giving a speech about how he meant to call but being held to a raise. In other words, angle shoot. In no way we advocate angle shooting. While we are not there to make friends, there is no place in poker for angle shooting.

How can you improve your 1/2 NL

1/2NL is one of more popular levels being played in casinos in the states. I ask David and Nick what advice they can give players to improve their game. Nick responds by simply saying “Dumb it down.” Too many time players at this level suffer from Fancy Play Syndrome. There is no reason to get cute. Reduce the amount of times you bluff. Play as straight forward as you can.

David believes one of the biggest leaks in players at this level is not doing the math. Too many times players invest too much money in chasing straights and flushes.

I believe that the biggest problem with players at this level is the failure to value bet. I’ve seen this too many times where players will check the river and are just happy to win the pot. They are losing value when they do this.

Also, I feel there are too many limpers in live poker. I ask Nick and David how they combat the limpers. David says that if he is entering a pot, especially in late position, he is coming in with a raise with any playable hand such as pocket pairs and suited connectors. If you start limping with these hands, you may catch your flush but have no idea where you stand. You are inviting in hands like K2 suited that could have you beat if you hit your flush. In short, PUNISH THE LIMPERS!

    10/20/40NL hand

A 5/10NL player was taking a shot and was playing a 10/20/40NL game. He bought in for 4k. He opens to 120 on the button with pocket 7s. A very good player raises to $360 from the small blind. We discuss what he should do at this point. I believe he should 4bet here. Against a very good player, his range is very wide here. Nick advocates flatting. Our hero decides to just flat call. The flop comes 10,4,3 with two clubs. The villain bets $600-$700 into a $800 pot. Hero calls. Turn comes Jc and both players check. The river pairs the Jack. The villain bets 3k into a 2k pot which puts our Hero all in.

What should our hero do? If this were a smaller stake game, a 2x pot bet is almost always the nuts in this spot. But with the higher levels, there are a lot more leveling wars which makes it so tough. I also mentioned that the villain was aware that our hero was taking a shot and playing above his comfort level. David suggests that if he wanted a call, he would make more of a value bet. Folding is also an option here. There could be a better spot down the road to get your money in. As it turns out, our Hero calls and the villain shows pocket 4s for a full house.

This was an interesting hand and some excellent discussion from our two coaches.
