Interview with Doug ‘WCGRider’ Polk on his Challenge Against Ben ‘Sauce123′ Sulsky

Posted by Tobias Block September 11, 2013

Tell us how the challenge started. Who talked to who first, and what did the process look like?

It was created pretty quickly. I just hit sauce123 up like a week ago. I was just basically saying “Hey, I’m in town, do you want to play?” I was trying to line up some action to see who would play me or not play me. And then he actually came up with the idea himself to do this.

Pretty soon the All-Star Showdown on PokerStars is coming up again (100K buy-in). I think sauce123 wanted to have a warm up for that, and the best way to do that would be to play someone over the course of a challenge to see where he was at. I’m planning on playing in that as well.

Speaking of the PokerStars Challenge, who’s going to play it?

Right now, I think the only people that seem to be confirmed are Ike Haxton, jungleman12 and me. I don’t think there is anyone else that has really confirmed. Kanu7 and sauce123 are very likely to play, because they played last year, too. I talked to the German guys (bbvisbadforme, SanIker), but they seemed concerned about it a bit.

    What are their concerns?

Last year, if they had known the exact lineup before, they would have played, because there were not only No-Limit heads-up specialists. The fact that someone like Phil Galfond played made it a little bit softer, as he usually doesn’t play No-limit that much. But I think it depends on how the lineup looks before they commit to it.

I think it’s tough for guys like you, or sauce123, or even jungleman12, to get a lot of heads-up action because games have been so dry over the last couple of months and no one wants to play anymore. So is this challenge largely an attempt to get action? Would you basically do anything to get action at this point?

It’s a couple of things. The first is, sauce123 and I have played a considerable amount of hands this year, we’ve played like 13 or 14 thousand hands, so it’s not like I haven’t played him this year. So he quit playing me somewhere around May or so, while I was winning at like 10 BB, maybe slightly less but in that vicinity. And he just told me that he has better action and wasn’t going to play in the future. But now he seemed a lot more interested, so, I’m a little worried that maybe he’s planning some kind of new strategy, and I’ve been railing the tables a little bit and it looks like he’s got a few new moves he’s ready to bust out. I’ve done fairly well against him so I’m more than happy to take on a challenge where I play someone a certain length of hands.

Share the details of the challenge with us.

It’s going to be a 15,000-hand challenge, the stakes are going to be $100/$200, and there is going to be a $100K side-bet. I believe the first match will be scheduled, and then after that it’s going to run basically whenever we can pick a time that we can both play. But this isn’t going to be a durrrr Challenge. I think our deadline is mid-October, but I think we’re going to sign some kind of contract so that we can vet that kind of situation.

Can the community be sure that you guys announce whenever you play on the 2+2 Forums, on QuadJacks, or anywhere else?

I’m probably going to be tweeting (@DougPolkPoker) before any of my matches, and I’m sure it will be well publicized. I think Full Tilt is going to be promoting it as well if we decide to do it over there.

So tell us a little bit about who enforced the entire challenge, was it your idea to come up with the challenge, or was it Sauce’s idea, how long did it take to set the rules?

It was sauce’s idea, I just wanted to get a match going and then we kind of bartered on the terms a little bit. I managed to get no deep play. So at 250 BBs we have a break, which is very favorable for me because Sauce is an animal at playing deep. But it was more of a mutual decision.

You just talked about sauce123 being a very good player deep, and that you’re going to quit tables at 250 BB. What other things are you a little bit worried about? How do you prepare yourself for this showdown?

Sauce is really good at bringing a theoretically balanced sound strategy to the table. In other words, when you’re playing versus Sauce in a lot of spots when he does something, he’s going to be doing it with a range that’s very theoretically balanced. He might be off by a little bit, but it’s fairly accurate. So, when you play against Sauce, you have to keep all of your ranges really in check, you’ve got to be accurately deciding when to bluff and value bet. You can’t just say “he always folds here”, because he doesn’t always fold here, he folds a certain percentage of the time. So you just have to play a very balanced solid game yourself, and just try to bring a more aggressive style to the table than what he is doing.

What people also think about Sauce’s play style is that he’s very variable with how he plays. We’ve talked about his limp strategy on the button, I’ve heard many people talk about that and say that he’s changing his limp strategy on the button a lot, from game to game, from opponent to opponent, from time to time. Are you worried that he can surprise you so that you might not have the right counter-strategy against him?

It’s funny you say that, because I’ve talked to a couple of people that played with him recently, about his limp strategy. One person is like “oh, that’s always weak” and the other person is like “oh, he’s super strong.” So really you don’t know what you are going to get until you play him. But, these are all still problems that have solutions. It’s not like he’s coming up with some crazy stuff that you can’t possibly counter. So I’m just going to take it one step at a time, see what he’s doing and adjust accordingly. I would definitely say that my game is more based on an adjustment style, while Sauce is more based on a theory style of play. To be a good player in today’s age of heads-up, I really think you need to have a good amount of both. You could be well versed in theory, and you could have very balanced and good ranges, but that only makes sense if we’re at a point where game theory optimal has been solved. As long as we’re not playing a perfect game, there is still room for improvement, there is still room for exploitation.

So I think you really need to have a good base in theory, and being able to adjust based off of factors of your opponent and the stats of your opponent. And then try to create a game plan that is profitable versus that. And frankly, that type of play style is probably my biggest strength.

How do you think Sauce himself will try to adapt to you or prepare for this match against you? Do you think he sees certain areas where he will try to target you?

I think that he absolutely will not. I don’t think that Sauce views poker like that. I think he views poker like he is Sauce. Cards are to be played as they are to be played. And he will click those buttons accordingly. But you never know, he’s a smart guy. Maybe he’ll just come out of left field and just start gunning for me in some spots where he thinks that I’m weak, but it would be very surprising to me if he did that and, honestly, it would actually not be as scary.

Because when people start to make those kinds of adjustments, the balance for you is very easy, you just call down appropriately and set your range to be balanced in those situations. Sauce doesn’t do that, Sauce comes up with theoretical solutions, and tries to implement them. Like he doesn’t really care what the screen name is against him. He could basically cover the screen name up; they have cards, he’s just doing his thing.

Do you think he would be better off if he would try to find exploits versus you? Because it sounds a bit like you don’t agree with that, always just clicking buttons no matter who you are playing against.

It depends, I don’t know how close to theoretically optimal he thinks he is. If he is already on the forefront of the perfect GTO play style, then he’s probably doing the right thing. If he’s just making assumptions based off of equations that he came up with, then no, in that case you still need to be adjusting.

Railbirds are lining up, and a lot of side bets are going on. We’ve seen the forums are exploding and people are mostly betting against Sauce, thinking you are the favorite. Sauce has over the years been considered to be the best heads-up player in No-Limit. Is it correct to say that things have maybe changed a little bit?

Well there’s a couple reasons why things have changed. The first is, Sauce has put a lot of time and effort into other game types. I mean if you look at his results in 2012, they were the best in online poker. He made the most money, but almost all of it was in PLO. I’m not entirely sure but he may have even lost money in No-limit. I don’t believe there is anyone better at heads-up PLO; he must be the best.
But I think that it is very difficult to be the absolute best at multiple game types. Because it just takes a complex level of understanding of poker. And it takes an ability to set aside concepts from one game type when you approach the other one. I’ve taken on every single other guy in No-Limit and I’ve pretty much won. There are one or two guys that have beaten me along the way. I’ve played everybody. I’ve been battling. I’ve been studying and working very hard on my game.

So I think whenever you’re looking at a scenario where you take a specialist versus someone that has a more broad reach in poker, the specialist will always have somewhat of an advantage due to the nature of how much time they are allowed to put in towards that. So yeah, those things will all give me an advantage, but at the same time, Sauce will definitely be prepared and play well.

So when do you start the challenge? Is there already a date set for that?

We’re aiming for the vicinity of the 15th (of September). It may start slightly earlier, but probably in about a week or so is the goal.

Are there penalties for the players for not showing up at the tables or for not playing a certain volume?

I really think that these aren’t going to be problems that we’re going to have, but we’re going to sort out the specifics for volume as we get closer to it. I would be disappointed if those became issues, because I’m more than willing to play every day, and to my knowledge Sauce is the same way, so I don’t think those are going to become major issues.

    Thanks for the Interview, Doug.

Editor’s Note: The specific details of the challenge as outlined above are Doug’s personal views on how they’re likely to look; Full Tilt Poker will have the right to make final decisions regarding such details.
