NFL Midseason Fantasy Football Award Watchlist

    Posted by Matthew-Blunk November 3, 2012

    And the nominees are:

    Tom Brady, New England Patriots

    Numbers: 2,408 passing yards/16 touchdown passes/2 rushing touchdowns/3 interceptions

It’s been business as usual for Brady and the Patriots’ offense in 2012. Josh McDaniels is back as offensive coordinator after flopping in Denver and St. Louis, but he has always worked well with Brady and Bill Belichick. And this time, he’s brought Brandon Lloyd in with him.
    Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints

    Numbers: 2,310 passing yards/20 touchdown passes/1 rushing touchdown/8 interceptions

    No Sean Payton? No problem.

The on-field leader of the Saints is playing as well as he always does without the team’s sideline general and chief playcaller. It’s New Orleans’ embarrassingly poor defense that is making it hard to watch this team.

    Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos

    Numbers: 2,113 passing yards/17 touchdown passes/4 interceptions/1 lost fumble

Manning has been a real pain in the neck for defenses this season.

Really though, no. 18 looks like the same old dominant signal caller, no matter what he wants you to believe. And he’s gelling with his big, athletic receivers – terrible news for the rest of the league and fantasy opponents.

    Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

    Numbers: 2,165 passing yards/21 touchdown passes/4 interceptions/1 lost fumblea

Rodgers is still the best player in football. He is overcoming an average offensive line and several key injuries in his supporting cast. Oh, and the Packers simultaneously can’t and refuse to run the ball.

    Arian Foster, Houston Texans

Numbers: 659 rushing yards/9 rushing touchdowns/77 receiving yards/1 touchdown catch

Foster is the engine that keeps the Texans going. He’s far and away the rushing touchdown king right now, and is a game behind most other stat leaders due to Houston’s bye week. This guy just doesn’t slow down.

    Alfred Morris, Washington Redskins

Numbers: 717 rushing yards/5 rushing touchdowns/1 lost fumble

Mike Shanahan and Bobby Turner have done it again: another obscure, low-round draft pick has flourished in their running back system. Give credit to Morris, though – he runs hard and seems to make all the right cuts. And he has become a weekly must-start in fantasy football.

    Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings

Numbers: 775 rushing yards/4 rushing touchdowns/139 receiving yards/1 lost fumble

    What torn ACL?

    Stevan Ridley, New England Patriots

Numbers: 716 rushing yards/5 rushing touchdowns/1 lost fumble

With Ridley, the Patriots may have found the true heir to Corey Dillon. Ridley is a power back who gets all the tough yards and then some. The presence of Shane Vereen is a mild concern, but it’s safe to say Brandon Bolden’s Week 4 abuse of the Buffalo Bills was a one-time deal.

    Victor Cruz, New York Giants

    Numbers: 52 catches/650 receiving yards/7 touchdown catches

The man with all the right moves keeps on producing for Big Blue. Cruz is perhaps the league’s deadliest slot receiver with his ability to potentially take any catch to paydirt.

    A. J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals

    Numbers: 44 catches/636 receiving yards/7 touchdown catches

Cincinnati’s prime target is having a solid season thus far, though owners might appreciate a little more action his way at times. Andy Dalton has bouts of inconsistency, but his rapport with Green remains strong.

    Demaryius Thomas, Denver Broncos

    Numbers: 39 catches/679 receiving yards/4 touchdown catches/3 lost fumbles

Peyton Manning’s new favorite deep threat is on pace for a career year. Eric Decker and Brandon Stokley work well with Manning too, but Thomas is the superior talent, and it’s showing.

    Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis Colts

    Numbers: 54 catches/757 receiving yards/2 touchdown catches/1 lost fumble

When it became clear Peyton Manning wasn’t going to be a Colt in 2012 and beyond, many assumed Wayne would follow his legendary quarterback to his next team. Manning’s replacement, Andrew Luck, is damn sure pleased Wayne chose not to. Ol’ reliable Wayne has been Luck’s go-to guy, particularly in an unforgettable comeback win over the Packers a few weeks ago.

    Owen Daniels, Houston Texans

    Numbers: 33 catches/416 receiving yards/4 touchdown catches

Matt Schaub’s reliable tight end has now become Houston’s most consistent receiving threat. Daniels doesn’t necessarily stretch the field, but he does all you could want from your tight end. And he possesses some of the softest hands in the game.

    Tony Gonzalez, Atlanta Falcons

    Numbers: 46 catches/459 receiving yards/4 touchdown catches

The ageless wonder is having yet another elite fantasy season in what may very well be his swan song. The Falcons are undefeated and Gonzalez is a big reason why.

    Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots

    Numbers: 43 catches/580 receiving yards/7 touchdown catches/1 lost fumble

When “The Gronk” isn’t goofing off in nightclubs, he’s dancing all over defenses. Teams still aren’t quite sure how to bottle up this physically-imposing beast, especially in the red zone.

    Heath Miller, Pittsburgh Steelers

    Numbers: 35 catches/336 receiving yards/6 touchdown catches

Miller has excellent value as a red-zone weapon, but with guys like Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown, and Emmanuel Sanders also warranting looks in the Steelers offense, his overall worth isn’t among the elite tight ends. Still, if you own him, you’re not necessarily stressing.

    Arizona Cardinals

    Numbers: 17.8 points allowed/8 interceptions/1 defensive touchdown/26 sacks

    Chicago Bears

    Numbers: 14.3 points allowed/16 interceptions/23 sacks/6 defensive touchdowns

    San Francisco 49ers

    Numbers: 12.9 points allowed/6 interceptions/15 sacks/1 defensive touchdown/1 shutout

    Jamie Harper, Tennessee Titans

Numbers: 11 rushing yards/3 rushing touchdowns

Harper had his vulture breakout two weeks ago against the Bills, when he thieved two scores from Chris Johnson. Harper has good size and a strong North-South style. Perhaps Tennessee should get him some more looks between the 20s.

    Andre Brown, New York Giants

Numbers: 236 rushing yards/5 rushing touchdowns

The once-potential-sleeper has now become a touchdown vulture, stealing food from the mouths of Ahmad Bradshaw owners’ babies.

    Toby Gerhart, Minnesota Vikings

Numbers: 108 rushing yards/2 lost fumbles

In the wake of Peterson’s catastrophic knee injury last season, Gerhart became somewhat of a fantasy darkhorse. The Vikings are a run-first football team and the bruiser out of Stanford has shown promise as a sometime-starter in the NFL, so it was natural to think Gerhart could become a fantasy factor. But Peterson is a freak with regenerative powers akin to Wolverine’s, and has been the same elite back this year. Having said that, I’m convinced Brad Childress is still lurking in the shadows sometimes when the Vikings inexcusably pull Peterson and give Gerhart entire drives at a time.

    Kendall Hunter, San Francisco 49ers

Numbers: 301 rushing yards/1 rushing touchdown

Hunter hasn’t received many looks at the goal line, but he is talented enough to deserve 10-15 snaps a game. Hunter’s skills can make Frank Gore owners a little nervous sometimes, though those same owners can find solace in Brandon Jacobs’ irrelevance and LaMichael James’ inactivity.

    Daniel Thomas, Miami Dolphins

Numbers: 155 rushing yards/3 rushing touchdowns/2 lost fumbles

The Dolphins have a variety of vultures on their roster, including rookies Jorvorskie Lane and Lamar Miller. But neither one has the talent of Thomas. He needs to work on consistency and has to improve his ball security, but Thomas has starter potential.

    Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers

    Numbers: 1,701 passing yards/5 touchdown passes/8 interceptions/310 rushing yards/3 rushing touchdowns/3 lost fumbles

Defenses have adjusted to Newton’s game, and the Panthers failed to adjust to those adjustments. Also, Carolina’s receiving corps is mostly terrible. But it could very well be possible that “Superman” possesses a few glaring weaknesses after all.

    Maurice Jones-Drew, Jacksonville Jaguars

    Numbers: 414 rushing yards/1 rushing touchdown/14 catches/86 receiving yards/1 touchdown catch

I know the man is injured. But MoJo is the defending rushing champion, and despite a comically bad supporting cast on offense and an ill-advised summer holdout, you come to expect a lot from a talent like him.

    Kate Upton, Sports Illustrated

    Numbers: 36-25-34

    Philip Rivers, San Diego Chargers

    Numbers: 1,646 passing yards/10 touchdown passes/9 interceptions/3 lost fumbles

Just two seasons ago, Rivers was one of the league’s elite passers and a fantasy darling. Now he appears desperate and unconfident on the field, chucking balls to ghosts of Vincent Jackson and Darren Sproles. The Chargers may have to do some spring cleaning this winter in their coaching staff and front office. But at what point do they consider a change at quarterback?

    Chris Johnson, Tennessee Titans

    Numbers: 595 rushing yards/2 rushing touchdowns/19 catches/128 receiving yards/1 lost fumble

Johnson checked in from football Siberia with 195 rushing yards and two touchdowns (including a fiery 83-yard score) in the Titans’ 35-34 victory over the Buffalo Bills two weeks ago. CJ owners had to be ecstatic about this breakthrough performance, though it was massively hindered by Jamie Harper’s goal line vultury. Three straight games with at least 90 yards on the ground have owners feeling pretty optimistic, but Johnson has a lot to prove before he can be considered “back.”
