Mainstream media does not always get poker news right

Did you know that Zynga is already offering a “real money option” to its gamers? That’s because it obviously isn’t, but if you were glazing over some of AdAge.com’s headlines and didn’t know any better, you might it was.

The self-hating poker media should not always look up to its more mainstream counterpart for lessons in “journalistic integrity.” Over the weekend, the magazine Advertising Age, via its online digital rubric AdAge.com, ran a story titled “Zynga Gamers Could Soon Be Cashing In,” presented in some mediums via its URL title, “Zynga Offers Real-Money Option to Gamers.”

The article spends about three paragraphs repackaging information that most of us are aware of already – what they said to All Things Digital in January, plus the recent buzz about a partnership with Wynn Resorts – then touts the “potential $5 billion in annual revenue for Zynga alone from online gaming, according to a January investor’s note from J.P. Morgan,” then quotes gaming law expert Cory Aronovitz as confidently promising that “it’s coming,” before spending the rest of the article detailing why it may not be coming, either as soon or as profitably as everybody would like.

Among the “fairly extensive legal hurdles” which AdAge.com cites as likely obstacles to Zynga’s real money flourishment are the limited number of states with legalized online gambling so far, plus interstate liquidity concerns, and all the rest. Tribal opposition is also name-checked in the article, and Connecticut is singled out as the state most likely to exemplify this “pitfall,” even though the CEO of Foxwoods, Scott Butera, told Connecticut newspaper The Day just four days ago that “he expects additional venues and online gambling to be a part of Foxwoods’ future.”

Daniel Tzvetkoff spotted, confronted in New York City

The reason why Black Friday happened has arms, legs, kids and was just seen hanging out in New York City. Australian-born Daniel Tzvetkoff co-founded the payment processing company Intabill in 2004 and quickly became one of the primary processors for the online poker industry which was just beginning to boom at the time. After teasing American authorities for quite some time with creative circumventions of the UIGEA, Tzvetkoff was arrested in Las Vegas in 2010 and later turned state’s evidence against his former cooperators, which has allowed the Southern District of New York to file United States v. Scheinberg et al.

Tzvetkoff has been living in police custody ever since and had not been heard from or seen by the popular press, until two days ago, when reporters for the Australian newspaper The Courier-Mail spotted him strolling with his family in New York’s Chinatown district.

Tzvetkoff was confronted by the reporters and initially denied his identity before begging to be left alone. As told by the newspaper: “When approached by The Courier-Mail, Tzvetkoff at first denied who he was. ‘No, that’s not me,’ he said. ‘No, no,’ he said, refusing to answer questions. ‘Look, you’re going to get in a lot of trouble. There are people with us who you’re going to be in trouble with,’ Tzvetkoff said while pointing behind him. When he couldn’t specify who his secret protectors were he said: ‘Look mate, you’re going to get in a lot of trouble with me right now.’ He hastily packed his family into a nearby taxi and drove off.”

Tzvetkoff had been slated to act as witness for the trial of John Campos and Chad Elie, before both men were ultimately allowed a plea bargain. He is expected to serve some testimonial purpose if any of the Black Friday trials ever have their day in court.

People wondering why PPA has less money after Stars, Tilt expelled

David Saleh Rauf, a technology reporter for POLITICO who has written about online poker legislation before, points out that after Black Friday, the poker community’s main political action committee (PAC), the Poker Players Alliance, has taken a financial hit.

Writes Rauf: “A Justice Department crackdown on several Internet gambling websites is dealing a heavy blow to the efforts of Washington’s premiere [sic] online poker PAC to raise cash and throw it at lawmakers. Fundraising and spending by the Poker Players Alliance PAC declined by more than half in the year since the DOJ shuttered three of the largest online poker sites, a POLITICO review of campaign finance disclosures shows. The PPA also reduced its spending on lobbyists by about 20 percent last year.”

Mr. Rauf may be overlooking the fact that PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker were the primary donors of the Poker Players Alliance, and with their expulsion from the U.S. market, the resulting austerity should hardly come as a surprise. While the PPA searches for new donors, the powerful brick-and-mortar industry in the United States has instead chosen to back FairPlayUSA, a newer lobbyist organization which much more directly represents the casinos’ interests.

Rich Muny, VP of Player Relations for the PPA, tells QuadJacks: “In the past, despite the fact that many parties would benefit by poker licensing, the players had to carry much of the load of the federal lobbying. That lobbying effort succeeded in demonstrating the viability of passing online poker legislation which, in turn, brought U.S. brick-and-mortar interests and others into the lobbying effort. This has resulted in a more equitable division of labor and resources in the online poker advocacy effort.”

He concludes with the following plea: “With the Department of Justice determination that the Wire Act does not apply to online poker, we can be sure Congress and many states will be looking at licensing legislation. To ensure the players are heard on Capitol Hill, every poker player should join PPA. After all, many groups are lobbying for poker. Only PPA is lobbying for poker players.”

Internet gaming momentum boosted by slot makers’ participation

Las Vegas Review-Journal gaming reporter Howard Stutz offers a thorough study of equipment manufacturers’ involvement in online gaming technology in today’s paper. According to Stutz, “Most major slot machine manufacturers are poised to enter online gaming.” Leading gaming manufacturers IGT, Aristocrat, WMS and Bally are singled out for having made their online gaming intentions quite clear in the recent months. IGT shelled out $500 million dollars to buy out Facebook-based online casino provider Double Down Interactive, and will soon be premiering its new “American Idol” slot machine for free play on the Internet.

“IGT has company in the social gaming space,” continues Stutz. “Slot machine rivals WMS, Aristocrat Technologies and Bally Technologies are putting games on the Internet to give potential customers or regular slot players a chance to try them.” Stutz also reminds us of ShuffleMaster’s acquisition of the OnGame poker network.
