The 20 Funniest and/or Most Interesting Hallway Interviews of the 2013 World Series of Poker

Posted by Quad Jacks July 22, 2013

From the hilarious rants by Grafton and Marafioti, to the serious confrontations between Greg Merson and Gus Hansen, we look back at our most watchable, memorable and exciting moments of the 2013 World Series of Poker.

#20: Mike Matusow wins a bracelet. “Never lose hope!”

We won’t deny it. We’re big fans of Mike the Mouth here at QuadJacks, and we like to see him do well. Those of you who were listening back in the Black Friday days will remember that Matusow was among one of our most open and sincere guests, and at a time when Full Tilt Poker was going to great lengths to silence its own players, it meant a lot that the man they call “the mouth” was courageously willing to live up to his moniker.

But we’ve followed Matusow since then, and we know first-hand – usually, from his own accounts – how tough it has been for him after the downfall of Full Tilt. And yet, this year alone, on two separate occasions, Mike “the Comeback Kid” Matusow has shown he can still hold his own even without a large poker room behind him. In January, he won the NCB National Heads-Up Poker Championship. This summer, Matusow earned his first bracelet in 5 years, and his 4th overall of his career, by beating out 209 competitors to win the $5,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Low Split-8 or Better event.

#19: David Benefield takes a crack at the Main Event, starts out Day 7 dead last, ends up final tabling.

David “Raptor” Benefield was already an online poker legend in his early twenties, the quintessential “Internet wiz.” And yet at the height of his succces, in 2009, “Raptor” announced he would be taking a break from poker, playing less while pursuing other business and academic interests.

Benefield has done well for himself since he took a break from poker, but he still plays the Main Event, and this year, Benefield ran pretty deep. He was shortstacked on Day 7, however (the day on which they play down to the November Nine), starting out in dead last place, 27 out of 27. But the attitude which Benefield shows in this interview – calm, composed, totally in control – enabled the young man not just to survive, but to come back swinging, and ultimately conquer his place as one of the 2013 WSOP November Niners!

#18: Jeff Madsen wins a bracelet, unblocks Marco and makes fun of the Ladies Event… (but it’s okay, because he isn’t playing it.)

For reasons that aren’t yet quite clear and honestly don’t really matter, Jeff Madsen once blocked Marco on Twitter, and Marco, being the stuck-up little girl that he is, hasn’t forgiven Jeff for it. He makes sure to bring it up in this interview instead of talking to Madsen about his recent bracelet win, although that does get a small mention as well.

Madsen mercifully unblocks Marco, who can finally read Madsen’s tweets of the day: this year’s winner of the $3000 PLO event has spent much of the day pretending he was playing the Ladies Event, by tweeting out phony “updates” about some of the action he was witnessing at his gals-filled table. It was a humorous but controversial stunt for sure, and despite how you may feel about it, Madsen turns out to be at least decent enough to assert that he would never play the Ladies’ Event and that any guy who does it is a douche. We’ll take it! Along with the laughs.

#17: Max Steinberg busts the 2013 Main Event, but not before taking Phil Ivey’s (tournament) life.

Iowa native Max Steinberg wasn’t feeling that great at the start of this interview, and who would after busting the Main Event in any position, but after some banter and a few laughs, he admits he’s feeling a bit better. Plus, he just got signed to 888.

Earlier in the tournament, Steinberg busted Phil Ivey, in a hand that went on to be hotly debated in poker circles (Steinberg offers his own view of it in this interview). Getting to knock out Phil Ivey was a unique experience, but much of the entertainment in this interview is due to the semi-fictional character “Todd,” the Bay Area dude, who also played an important role in the Ivey bust-out hand.

#16: Ray Romano cracks the secret on why comedians don’t make good poker players.

Iconic American comedian Ray Romano is a big poker buff and has been playing the WSOP Main Event for the last six years. As he puts it in this interview, he “looks forward to it all year, and it’s devastating when you bust.”

We think Romano may have been on to something when, earlier that day, he told his table, “Comedians can’t be good poker players because we want everybody to love us.” Romano explains how his soft-hearted attitude often makes him do things he shouldn’t tactically be doing, like showing everybody his cards, taking it easy on the short-stacks, etc. Hell, from a guy whose show used to be called “Everybody Loves Raymond,” we don’t have a hard time believing what Ray is saying.

#15: Nate Silver can actually crush at poker.

There are two things that are absolutely remarkable about this interview with famed statistician and political pundit Nate Silver: a) the video, by no design of our own, clocks in at exactly 5 minutes and 38 seconds (“FiveThirtyEight” is the nickname, and Twitter handle, that Silver goes by). And b), this may be the first poker-only interview with Nate Silver in existence, where we talk strictly about poker without any space given to current events, elections, and other things that Silver is routinely asked about by poker and non-poker media alike.

As many people now know, Silver used to be a semi-professional online poker player prior to UIGEA. Upon the passage of that fateful act in 2006, Silver put the poker on hold and started focusing more on political statistics, eventually becoming the electoral wiz that made him a household name in America and across the world. This year, Silver took some time off to play a few WSOP events, and he ended up running pretty well! The poker player within him, he says, is coming back the more and more he plays.

#14: Two Plus Two Chief Mason Malmuth does a rare video interview.

Most of us here are big fans of the Two Plus Two community, no matter how often the trolling gets out of hand. It’s almost by design that 2+2 Overlord Mason Malmuth usually stays out of the posters’ business, so that the area can thrive and self-govern on its own. But a consequence of this is that we usually don’t see – or hear – a lot of Mr. Malmuth, which makes many people curious: what does he look like? What does he sound like? What are his views on the distance his company has gone, and what does he think about the future of online poker in America? And also, what the hell is he doing at the 2013 WSOP?

All of these questions are answered in this video.

#13: Barny Boatman wins the first bracelet of his career, and the first for the UK of the 2013 WSOP.

Barny Boatman is a living legend of poker, both in the UK and internationally. He has played the game for decades, served as an example to others, and yet he’s one of those poker champions who has never won a bracelet. Or at least he used to be. This summer, Boatman won a $1500 No Limit Hold’em event at the 2013 WSOP, defeating Brian O’Donoghue in the process.

Boatman is known to be usually cheerful and humorous in his interviews – at least in the ones we’ve done with him in the past – and while he did crack a few jokes in this one, most of it was pretty serious and, at times, emotional. As Barny explains, if you had asked him prior to his win whether winning a bracelet meant anything to him, he would have told you no, but he really had to experience it in order to know what an overwhelming and humbling moment of his life it really turned out to be.

Boatman pays his respects to his heads-up opponent O’Donoghue and to the younger generation of UK players, many of whom were raucously cheering him on, and later mobbed him, when he won the illustrious WSOP gold bracelet.

#12: WSOP Media Director Seth Palansky shows his extremely dry sensse of humor.

If you’ve ever had to work at the WSOP, then you’ve likely had to deal with Seth Palansky, the head of communications for Caesars Interactive Entertainment. But has Seth ever tormented you with his extremely dry humor, wit, sarcasm, and often times plain old needling?

We know the feeling all too well at QuadJacks, since we’ve had to cover the WSOP since 2010, but in time, we’ve grown to love and appreciate Seth’s unique character. This isn’t the first time he’s made Marco laugh out loud on camera, but it may be the first time he is also delivering some important news and interesting facts about the World Series of Poker, present and future.

#11: Cheering up Steve Gee is hard, but not impossible.

You may remember Steve Gee as the November Niner from last year, and the guy who was the first to bust the 2012 WSOP Main Event final table. Earlier this summer, Gee told the poker press that he never really got over the experience. It wasn’t hard to understand how a November Niner who busts early can feel a little disappointed, but this year, Gee enjoyed another phenomenal Main Event run, ultimately coming in 24th… and he’s still miserable!

This interview is very sincere and may be one of our best feats to date, since we were able to make Steve Gee laugh and feel a bit better about life at a time when he said he couldn’t be more disappointed. Steve, keep at it!

#10: Musical sophisticate Steve Albini talks poker and non-poker alike.

Those who are so entrenched in the poker world that they hardly know anything else may have a hard time recognizing regular player Steve Albini when he sits at their table, and so they might be oblivious to the fact that he is a living legend in the world of music. Albini has worked on numerous records with various iconic bands, and continues to produce music to this day. He also enjoys poker, two activities which he refuses to draw some sugary comparison to when asked.

Albini dealt closely with Nirvana and Kurt Cobain back when the late frontman was still around. At the end of this interview, Albini shares an interesting anecdote about what it was like to be around the band during this period, before Cobain tragically took his own life in 1994.

#9: Shaun Deeb offers first-hand account on what it’s like in Macau these days.

We all keep hearing about the great poker action in Macau these days and everything like that, but most players who go there prefer to remain pretty mum about it. Not Shaun Deeb. In this interview, the only question about Macau that Deeb doesn’t feel like answering is the one having to do with women (although he does give a tip to single guys who like to party).

Deeb’s account of the poker action in the gambling capital of Asia – arguably the gambling capital of the world nowadays – is often stunning. He describes games filled with multi-millionaires who are playing “like Scandies and Russians before they figured out how to play.” Reflections on how spending time in playing in Macau has changed him and broadened his view of poker are also interesting.

#8: Matt Marafioti lets his haters have it.

There may be no bigger online celebrity in poker than Matt Marafioti. Certainly sometimes Matt has done things to invite the attention, other times it just self-perpetuates from there.

This isn’t the first time ADZ and Tobi spoke. A month or so earlier, Marafioti had been a guest on Tobi’s program, Tobi’s Table Talk. The ADZ episode, during which Tobi barely got a word in while Marafioti lashes out at practically everyone in the poker world, quickly went viral, and only fueled interest into this young, fast-living, mile-a-minute Canadian.

ADZ barely needs Tobi to prod him again in this fast-paced interview. Amidst all the bravado, there are also moments of seriousness in which ADZ tries to communicate the type of person he really is.

#7: Phil Galfond on adjustments… and physical transformations.

Black Friday has notoriously changed the lives of numerous online poker players, but for Phil Galfond, it seems like the transformation was total. The online poker legend often known as OMGCLAYAIKEN looks like a different person, started his own poker training business Run It Once and, like many others, had to move up North to Canada to keep playing. However, routine stop to the U.S.A. are common, especially to play the WSOP.

Galfond thus knows a thing or two about adjustments. How do you go from online cash to live, large field tournaments? Similarly, how do you switch gears between No Limit Hold’em and Pot Limit Omaha? In all of his soothing calm, Phil tries to answer these questions.

#6: Ike Haxton with a global view on poker and how it’s changing.

Few pros are perhaps better traveled nowadays than Ike Haxton, who just returned from an excursion in Asia, to come to Vegas to play the WSOP, just before he heads back to Vancouver to play online and then straight back to Europe for some EPT’s.

It’s almost a bit surprising that somebody like Haxton made any time at all for the WSOP this year, when it seems like many high stakes pros of his caliber are opting to either sit it out completely or play a very reduced schedule. Why is this? Ike attempts to explain it in this interview. “The WSOP is no longer the only game in town,” he says, adding that with so many new poker hot spots springing up around the world, better action can usually be found away from Vegas. Haxton also voices a commonly heard complaint recently that the WSOP may be driving away high stakes players like him by lowering the buy-ins on so many events.

    #5: Nolan Dalla: “Boycott QuadJacks!”

Okay, it’s like this: Sheldon Adelson acted like a dick about online poker again, and this time Nolan Dalla encouraged the poker community to boycott the Venetian outright. Since Dalla works at the WSOP, we decided to have an interview with him about the logistics and motives of the boycott. You can view that original interview here.

What you don’t know about that interview is that it was originally much longer, and had to be edited down into basically Dalla sounding like an angry old man the whole time. In addition, Marco is an asshole, and when he was editing the blasted thing, he couldn’t help but raise the pitch of Dalla’s voice at key point.

Dalla saw what we had done with “all the gold he gave us” and was none too pleased. He asked that we do another interview to straighten things up, gave us a time and date and… well, here’s what ended up happening.

#4: Sam Grafton with a million funny stories.

As we are fond of saying, if you have spent any time in the Rio hallway during a tournament break, chances are you have overheard this man. Sam Grafton is a UK player whose voice can usually be heard from a mile away – and we love him for it.

Grafton is truly hilarious, one of the sweetest and funniest guys in poker. We enjoyed getting to know him at last year’s World Series, and in this summer’s interview, Grafton updated us on what a tremendous year it has been for him since. His standing in the poker world has increased, he has become a Run It Once coach alongside his idol Phil Galfond, he’s getting a ton of sick Twitter followers (Lucky Chewy FFS!), and generally he is just having a fun time in Las Vegas.

Grafton’s rants sometimes get so frenetic that it really does seem like he is talking in fast motion.

#3: Phil Laak and Jennifer Tilly are the absolutely coolest weirdos in the world.

Phil Laak is another one of those guys in poker who hasn’t been seen around a lot lately. Where has he been? What has he been doing? Playing poker? Doing other things? You’d think we’d ask him in this interview. And maybe we do, but not before a whole lotta crap that only Laak can make sound interesting. For example, there is a segment dedicated entirely to chapped lips that is absolutely riveting and informative. Like, seriously.

Midway through the interview, Laak is joined by his famous girlfriend Jennifer Tilly, herself a serious poker player these days, just after she ran deep in a WSOP stud event. Tilly turns out to be an even bigger riot than Phil. You simply have to see it to believe it.

#2: Greg Merson opens up, puts the Aria controversy and the Gus Hansen mini-feud a bit to rest before leaving Las Vegas.

In this year’s Main Event, 2012 champion Greg Merson made another very deep run that had the entire community buzzing. And yet this wasn’t the thing that Merson got the most attention for during the Series. A few weeks earlier, Merson has pubicly railed against Jean-Robert Bellande and the Aria poker room in general, arguing that the way the “private” high stakes poker games were being run there was getting out of control.

It wasn’t a pretty thing to see, and Merson himself acknowledges that maybe he should have dealt with it a bit more elegantly, but still, he does not regret bringing the issue to light, insisting that it’s something that affects the entire poker community and not just high stakes pros like himself.

This interview took place just after Greg Merson busted the 2013 Main Event, and he was in such a hurry to get out that we had to film it right outside of the Rio. But Merson was still able to make time for a thoughtful and thorough discussion, about what it is about the Aria and JRB that irritates him and what reactions he’s received from the poker community since first railing against the situation.

#1: Gus Hansen gives a unique glimpse of the high stakes poker world that he and a few others live in.

And so we get to what was all in all the most widely viewed, the most divisive and the most intriguing interview we had the pleasure of doing at the 2013 WSOP. Gus Hansen makes his QuadJacks debut.

Hansen is certainly a man of experience in the poker world, and not just in terms of hands played or insights acquired. He’s been involved in poker businesses, won and lost a ton of money, dealt with every kind of poker player imaginable… and today, he finds himself having to stick up for and defend an unpopular position, something that Hansen is no stranger to doing.

We talked earlier about Greg Merson and the stance he took against the Aria’s “private” high stakes poker games. Hansen is a regular in those games, and he took this interview opportunity to present an alternative viewpoint to the situation that perhaps neither Merson nor the community had previously considered.

This is hardly the only thing discussed in this nearly 20-minute long interview. There was also a lot of buzz around some of the high-stakes Open Face Chinese games happening at the Aria at the time – Hansen plainly admits to skipping an entire day of the Main Event in order to play those instead.

As divisive as he may sometimes be, and unafraid to say what’s on his mind no matter what people will think, we’re impressed by Mr. Hansen’s attitude, and we’re thankful to him for taking the time to speak so openly about the poker world, giving insight into a part of it that few of us ever get to see.
